Solmans New Samba VTi

Postby solman » Sun Sep 22, 2013 4:20 pm

So after being dicked around by my bodyshop I decided that maybe it was a blessing in disguise and what I should be doing is getting another shell, so thats what I've done. I have a pretty rare thing, a 1995 Samba VTi with 9/10 bodywork (No maggot) didn't they make like 50 of these? Most have probably been scrapped. Its been garaged most of its life and considering I was looking at 900-1200 at the very least to get the arches done this kind of made sense as I can recoupe most of that with parts off the old one and i'm pretty pleased with it.

The question is now what to do with it, I was toying with keeping it OEM looking (at least externally) popping a K in it, upgrading the brakes but the reason I bought all my carbon stuff was because thats the look I was going for. So I could keep all the OEM parts in storage and ready to swap back should I want to sell up. The good thing is I have a garage now so it will be kept under cover in storage, the small 1p of rust on the arch will be treated. Front bumper has seen some paint which highlights a little difference in the OEM paintwork but its not so bad. The wheels were diamond cut but have been flattened and painted but are pretty good considering that getting them recut has its own problems\cost.

In terms of cost I paid what I would consider bang on really, considering that I sold the blue VTi earlier in the year for £1500 and this is way better.

So now time to think hard, hmmmm to vandalize it? It needs mud guards for sure, hate the way sols look without them and the roof is broken but I can and will fix it. One weird thing is that the registration date is my birthday

If you decide to pop in a k20 I may gave one going for a reasonable sum :)

Looks clean though.

I was trying to find the UK sales numbers by colour, I'm sure we had a post somewhere with them (maybe im imagining it!). Si will no doubt be along as he was always banging on about it when he had his VTi. It might have been lower than 50, such a long time ago. I know due to it being an acquired taste that not many were sold

Just UK VTi's though with TT's? Not imports or ESi's.

Found some other posts, it was about 55, can't remember how we found this out though.

An excellent choice there if I may say so. Much better than anything the bodyshop would have done. Looking forward to seeing this next year. :D

Going to test fit the carbon boot this weekend, not sure how this will work being that I'll have to wire in the boot lights and I can't for the life of me figure out how thats going to work with the underside of the boot as the holes just don't seem right. Then I'll see how the spoiler lines up, hoping I can start stripping the old car of the bits I want to shift over. Going to be a long old job! But a good one

Today I have swapped over the front suspension parts, bils and eibachs, (pics to follow) the car now looks totally slammed on the front better already with the front mudguards done as well. I can't wait to drive it once the setup off the SiR is on, the car feels really good already when compared to the SiR which has done twice the miles. Tomorrow I will attempt to do the rears and fit my subframe brace, my red blox rear ARB is going to be painted Samba green as is the front brace. I should pick my keys up for my garage on Monday where it will live tucked up undercover during the wet times.

Small update, this now has MG BB setup and my buddyclub track wheels on and finally got around to fitting my Momo Wheel\Momo Boss and B-G Racing quick release hub. It pushes the wheel out a good couple of inches which will take some getting used to as the indicators are further away but for track action it should be good, I have long legs anyway so this moves the seating position further back.

Its in bad need of a wheel alignment but with the brakes on I feel a bit more at home in it, doesn't feel as hooked up as the SiR did but I'm sure once the final few handling bits are fitted it will be just as good, ought to be as its done half the mileage and was garaged for 10 years!

Will be putting the facelight show bumper in for paint next week, hopefully this will be tucked up in the dry soon ready for some underseal and the fitting of my carbon fibre bits. Will be putting some bits in to be sandblasted and painted up Samba Green shortly like the front brace and the rear ARB. Nice to see a bit of progress but I've still got a lot to do and times ticking away!

Bumper is going in for paint on Monday, my super soft stretch car cover has come from Classic Additions http://www.classicadditions.com/

This weekend I will be going for full clean\wax\polish. Starting to strip out the interior bits for repairing the TT for the summer (The alarm buzzer was disconnected by the last owner after a fault couldn't be repaired) then I can fit my Cup holders\Gathers covers\Stereo and grease the window mechs up as the windows are sticky. Need to find some hands to help me with the bonnet removal and remove the old boot and figure out what I'm going to do with the number plate lights. Gear\Engine oil change as well as a fix for the leaking cam seal that some joker smeared with instant gasket instead of doing it properly. 70 days till Japfest
