Morgan100's B18 Turbo Del Sol

Postby morgan100 » Tue Feb 07, 2012 11:15 pm

Ok so been a little busy since buying the car at the end of last year...finally had some time to start one of these

having previously owned a Del Sol VTI which i used daily I kinda felt I never got to really do everything I wanted to it cause I could never have it off the road for very long, so when the offer to buy a cheap low mileage SIR came up I jumped at the chance. Shes a little rough around the edges but im in no rush to get her on the road so all these rough edges will be smoothed out sooner or later

Plans are to rebuild it and turbo it, the aim being 300bhp at around 15psi (havent decided on what turbo yet so these figures will change no doubt)
Strip out as much as possible (roof has already been fully converted to a manual which saves me a lot of work)
The car when its done will eventually be used for track days, drag racing, occasional weekends and i'll maybe give hillclimbs a bash

Done a few bits so far:
Removed all the A/C
Removed Power steering and looped the lines
Removed all interior plastic, heater matrix and fan
Stripped all the front suspension out for cleaning and painting
Rebuilt front Coilovers (TA Technix coilovers that were on the car)

Bought a few bits and pieces too:
GSR cams
F1 racing stage 2 clutch
ITR flywheel
D2 shortshifter
poly shifter bushes
Buddy club front camber adjusters

Im still researching turbo set ups and the best build for my power goal, currently thinking of running GSR pistons on standard rods to lower the CR to 9:1, GSR cams and adjustable gears. The whole engine will be rebuilt with new gaskets, stem seals etc. What or if i will uprate anything when rebuilding the head i have not decided yet, possibly dual valve springs...any advice appreciated.

I pulled the driveshafts the other weekend to find the dreaded bar between the shaft...i.e. no LSD :( Ill be looking to pick up a box from a 1.8VTI civic with the LSD, Ive read the longer gear ratios are also benifical for turbo'd motors

Ill try and keep this updated as best I can with progress...it may be slow but it will be progress

Cheers!

just a thought but why dont you just find a B18C4 and drop that in and turbo that? if you are giong to the effort of rebuilding a B16, you may as well start with the B18 and use that instead.....

The thought had crossed my mind and if a b18 comes up near me for a decent price i will jump at it, but for now ill work with what ive got, my power goal is easily got at with either the b16 or b18

indeed it is, just dont get too hung on up "psi", find a turbo that will work well with the engines dynamics. The honda engine flows very well so go too small and youll run out of puff easily.

Yeah like i said im still researching loads and trying to work out what the best turbo will be for the aim of 300bhp. 'psi' will just be relative to turbo, map etc i dont really have a 'psi' goal.

Any suggestions of the size of turbo i should be looking at? I dont want something like you said too small that runs out of puff too quickly but in the same respect I dont want something thats going to take forever to spool and give me a big lump of power at the top of my rev range

big turbos arnt as bad as most make out for lag. the reason i say this is that altho they dont reach there full potential untill after a smaller one. they do still make boost at a lower psi, just not as much.
when im looking at what you want to do with car altho more power is always going to better for each of the things you want to do, drag, hill and track. in my opinion it would be hard to find a turbo ( or car for that matter ) that would excell in all of these cases.

if you were staying with a b16 then i would say something like an evo9 turbo, or a GT28RS. If a b18 then i would probably use a GT3071R of a midrange precision unit. Its difficult to get it right with a turbo honda, as the heads flow so well being a fairly highly strung NA car, they arent well matched to the typcal turbos you would put on a similar capacity engined car if you see what i mean.

I mean even though i have a truck turbo on the front of mine, the car off boost is still pretty peppy, its just if you are fortunate enough to get to boost the world goes a bit blurry.

I run a GT3071r on my B16 and i really is a fantasic urbo. Whatever you do seer clear of T3/4 turbos as they are rubbish imo. Research is definately key with turbo set ups mate as its very easy to build a car that is terrible to drive. For he wide range of motorsports you want to go for id go with neils idea of a B16 with an evo urbo. They tend to drive like a much more powerfull N/A car.

If your going to all he effort of sripping he block id also seriously consider forging the engine purely for peace of mind. Alo of people run standard compression and pistons turbo'd but i know alot of us on here (me included) have broken sandard cast pistons with boost. For the extra work its well worth it.
The Sol has passed on but its 370bhp heart is soon to live on in a MK2 CRX track car :-)

298.7whp (350-370bhp) + 220wtrque @ .9BAR GT3071r with more to come on the new build

thought a quick pic was in order, just to so some progress

gutted all the heater pipework from behind the dash, hopefully start chipping all the sound proofing from the floor at the weekend (can't wait for that, looks fun :( )

seriously considering just biting the bullet and opting for forged pistons and rods...it will take me longer to get the car on the road due to financing it but in the long run will be more benificial to me cause I can guarentee at some point ill want more boost :) just need to get saving...well saving more

I also ment to ask, i think ive possiblly mentioned it before but the roof ECU is still in the boot and tbh i'd quite like it gone. now ive been told this controls the electric windows too so I went and unplugged it, tried the windows and yes...they don't work.

Question is, could i not take 'something' from a manual roofed Del Sol to control the windows, my old VTI definatly didnt have that big ass roof ECU in the boot, so what is it that controls it???

There is a different electric window module box which is a black box I believe mounted near the HU under the trims. Do you actually want to replace the transtop with a manual roof? Several people have done that on here - it is doable
EDIT: I can see the box in your pic lol

Are you only going to be dragging this? Hence the need for no heaters? I would love to remove mine but they don't make heated front windscreens for the delsol like they do for the EG Civic :(
