Rear Arches.

Postby charly » Fri May 06, 2016 4:19 pm

Help !
My 93, Crx is a fantastic car, ultra reliable , no rust, except the rear arches, and inner arches, the one local body shop who would do the job wanted £ 800 ,to do both sides, everyone I know says I should scrap the car, as it's far too good for that , I'm asking here for advice.
Thanks.

Hello Charly

I personally think if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well. If it's only the arches that are rusty, it's surely worth having them cut out and replaced properly.

When you think of what's involved I'm not so sure £400 a side is all that bad. Why not get some other quotes to compare? - I appreciate you mention one local bodyshop, but maybe it'll be worth travelling a bit further.

Hi Gazz
Have you any knowledge regarding sourcing new arches ? Ive tried two car panel shops and they tell me they carnt get them .I think this would be half the battle, although the inners are starting to rot as well.
Thanks
Charly.

Only arches you can use are eg civic hatches. They aren't an exact match and require a lot of work to fit, Honda were selling panels for about £400 a side but not sure they are available any longer.
Did you know DSUK are on:

£400 a side is actually pretty good if it includes paint !
You want to make sure they do a proper job cutting out all the rust and welding in new material though, id probably ask to see it before they fill/paint as ive seen plenty of people get patch up jobs that rust through again within a year. I would also take your skirts off and check the outer sills as its a common place for rust if your rear archs are going

Thanks, Skitz, You have addressed my main concern, I dont mind so much paying £ 800,well I do, but I love my car, it's just paying and then within a year or two it's as bad as it is now, asking to see the work before its covered is a good plan, I have a feeling he wont be keen, and if thats the case I might as well caty it myself, and get another two years of motoring, it would be a shame though.

Maybe a plan would be to try and locate a original Crx, although I know thats going to be tough.

My Crx, is done, new arches inner and outer, both sides, and rear end re spray, after second respray the match is very good, I went with the guy who did the work to 4he paint shop and choose the swatch , apparently there is 7 shades of Milano red,the outer arches used was of a mk 2 astra, sounds weird but, as I said they look really good, pics to follow shortly,
ps the whole job was £650.

The body shop is in Middlesbrough, he's done a good job, cash in hand of course , although the guy is a nightmare to work with,
Ps, he said he wouldnt do another one, he was suprised himself how much work was involved.
