Steering Rack Boots

Postby byway » Thu Oct 22, 2015 10:38 pm

just failed MoT on split boots/gaiters on the steering rack (I am pleased that is all it failed on as it's been unused for quite a few months).
I have bought universal ones to put on but I notice that the ones that are on have a hose leading to them. What is it for and does it matter if I blank it off since there are no connectors for it on the universal replacements?

cheers

It's to stop them distorting due to pressure - so as one 'inflates' the other 'deflates' keeping an equilibrium. I've had to change one of mine and have left the pipe on the other tucked up out of the way so the hole in the boot remains covered and it can still vent.

I've had no ill effects.
