Vibration through car

Postby kenco » Sun Oct 18, 2015 5:00 pm

Hi. Getting quite serious vibration through the steering wheel and through the whole car. Feels like the wheels aren't on right. Pulls very slightly to the right at low speed but otherwise ok. I get more vibration when backing off the throttle.
I've looked underneath and everything appears to be as it should.
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas?

Tyre pressures okay?

Lost a wheel balance weight?

Tyres wearing evenly? Pulling suggests either tracking or a brake holding on.

Usual checks are: for speed with tyre related issues - then it may come say after 45 and ease off after 80mph. It may stop when brakes applied - then its the brakes etc; it may get worse on left turn/ right turn - then could be c/v or drive shafts etc. THis is most likely a tyre/wheel balance issue and perhaps a place to start from.

If its pulling to the right then its probably quite bad because of the road camber. Whats it like under braking? I would for sure head straight to that offside front caliper and take a look, if you go for a drive and come back and that side is super hot it will be that. Get it looked at though, all these cars are old now and many components could be at fault. Everything above is sensible to check

Problem solved, on closer inspection had a huge bulge on the inside of each front tyre. That'll teach me to buy cheap tyres.
I've bought some decent tyres got the tracking done and softened the settings on the front suspension.
Most of all thanks for giving me advice and things to check and look for. It's times like these that the forum stands out from the crowd. Thanks.

another issue that can cause this is people using oem wheels nuts on aftermarket alloys or aftermarket nuts on oem alloys

they have a different tapered seat on them.

What tyres were they Kenco? Didn't bounce up any kerbs on em? Good job it was fairly easy fix.

I try and stay away from cheap tyres if I can help it, our roads are so crap now! And avoid anything without a reinforced sidewall and good speed rating.

The tyres were Nankang. I vaguely remember hitting a large pot hole/damaged road surface at speed the other day. I did have the front suspension set very hard so have turned it down a couple of clicks to soften it up a bit.
In some respects the tyres did good because they didn't blow, but glad I double checked them otherwise could quite easily have blown at any time.
