I then used red lens repair tape to cover the white lens of the old reversing light and this worked ok and looked good. However over time the colour of the tape fades and needs replacing.

The red LED bulb looks like a better way to go - where did do get it?

plus the fact the rear fog is spos to be brighter than the other rear lights..using a regular bulb covered in tape is pretty pointless imo

There seems to have been some misunderstanding. I didn't cover the bulb with tape (that would be stupid) - I did cover the lens with tape (that worked). A standard rear fog light bulb can then be used.

old thread revived, as it was linked in a current thread.
anyway one question... what wattage are rear fog lights supposed to be?
I have a jap import, so dont have rear fogs yet.
I was having an idea - and it might be a dumb one.

I have a set of US rear lights - they have 4 bulb holes, 2 red and 2 clear:
For the clear I will use a silver bulbs as indicators and have my reverse lights on each side.
For the red I will use one for my normal light with brake light integrated in one bulb.
Could I use a similar bulb and have 2 fog lights one on each side, so I use all the available bulb holes???
AS this would be a bulb with dual filament could I have 2 rear lights on each side???
Cheers, Dave.

you will fail an mot with a foglight on both sides, you are only allowed to have 1 foglight and it must be either dead central (like the pug 206) or on the o/s of the car. i wasnt aware usdm lights were any different? they certainly dont look it with them turned on or are they aftermarket?
get yourself a 19+ red led bulb of ebay or from halfords, im using one when i do mine this week and its fully legal.

they are aftermarket US ones... I'm also based in Ireland, and I *think* two rear fogs are allowed for the NCT (Irish version of MOT), but I'm not 100% sure, nor am I sure what wattage they must be (or what range of wattage is allowed).

best thing to do is go to a testing place and find out then.

An idea I was playing with - could you use an LED brake light as a rear fog-light - mounted under the rear bumper (in the middle)? It should be bright enough and would look quite neat as they are so thin. That way you could also keep both reversing lights and things would be nice and symmetrical! I take it there is no maximum length for a fog light?

why not just put it in the rear light, keeps everything tiday and no need for holes and extra wiring

How could it be too high if it mounted to the bottom of the bumper?

If you only have 1 fog light then it must either be dead central or on the offside rear of the car. There is nothing wrong with having a fog light on both sides (in fact, this is better at it shows both corners of the car). Many cars have symmetrical rear fogs.

As for the brightness, I'll need to double check but I seem to remember something that says it must be of equal, or greater, brightness as the brake lights.

was thinking about just tapping into the cigarette lighter live through a light up switch then straight into the reverse lamp holder?

There are spare spade terminals in the fuebox under the steering wheel, one of which is live when the lights are on. I'd take the power from those terminals personally. I think they are also fused too (not 100% sure) so that could be safer too.

p.s dont forget to use a switch which illuminates as that is also an MOT req. I wired in the UK fog switch. I'll have to do a quick write up but it's very easy

Also the fog light has to be at least 100mm away from any brake light otherwise that is an MOT failure.

Thats why UK/EDM cars have different rear lights to JDM lights.

The UK/EDM lights have a blanking plate molded in so the rear brake light in each cluster only shows half way across the bottom of the light.

The JDM ones don't and show it across the entire bottom of the light.

Always amuses me when you see Sol's with a UK light one side and a JDM one on the other!
