Install HID Conversion

Postby dan_miles86 » Sat Apr 19, 2008 10:48 pm

First How To so stick with me guys, anything ive missed out just let me know!
The images I have put as links to save long load times.

First off, Im glad I did it. The best pound for pound improvement I've got out of the Sol. Very quick and easy to fit aswell.

I got these lights off ebay, single beam H4's to use as the main dipped headlights. Will do full beams another day.
They dont seem to blind other driver or anything like that.
Ebay item
Upon arrival

From seller 2flage, overall cost £45 with postage and took a week to arrive which didnt seem too bad.

First thing was to check everything went together ok, the instructions seemed clear although in Engrish.
Mine had 3 cables to couple from the bulb to the ballast. Very easy as you could only connect them one way.

Next, take out the original H4 bulbs, there is a small plastic connector which you just pull off. Pull off the rubber part to reveal the bulb.
There is a little metal spring clip holding the bulb it, push it in and pull it toward the centre or the bulb to release.

When the new bulb goes in there will be a gap from where the plastic connector used to be. My HID's came with a rubber bung to help fill that gap. You can see from this picture that i just put it inside the original rubber cap and pulled it though a little way.
Rubber bung

Out the bottom of the rubber bung there is 2 holes to allow drainage, i pushed the two spade connectors out of here and into the orignal H4 connector to provide power. You can see the red (+) is on the top connector and black (-) on the right.
Spade connectors

Next place the bulb inside the light, clip in (usually hardwork but it will clip back i promise) and put the rubber cap back over the light.
You should now be able to power up and see the bulb working. Nice aint it!

Next is mount the ballast.
I didnt want to start drilling new holes so i reused existing ones i could find.
On the drivers side I moved this little relay from one hole to the next.
Move relay

The bolt the ballast on to the hole you just freed up.
Drivers side ballast

On the offside i mouted it in a free hole just above what i belive is the power steering fluid cooler. Im not sure if aircon guys can do this??
Offside ballast

At this point I thought i was done until I got some strange things happening when turning the side lights on and off.
This is because the sol uses the dipped H4 bulb on low power when the side light is put on.
To solve this locate the Dip/Dim resistor box and disconnect the wires going into it. They just unplug, nice and easy.
Location of Resistor box
Resistor box plug

Now you should be finished and working properly. Test well before going out!
In the whole process I never had to cut, break or remove anything OEM so it should be dead easy to put back to stock if required.
The only thing i noticed was the sidelights are now a little dim, but i have bought Ultra bright, white LED bulbs to replace the sidelights. They now have the same colour as the HID's and bright enough to not need the H4's to be on.

Finished

I have used 8000k and it seems like the perfect colour to me. You can see how yellow the main beams now look, even being ultra white halogen so must change them next!

Good luck, if I can help with problems just drop me a PM.

Dan.

Chris might have a solid answer for that as he has an SIR.

Im sure they are just standard H4 bulbs though so should be no different.

You dont modify anything in anyway at all so as long as you get the right fitting bulb its easy.

First of all you gotta find an H4H HID Kit. Ngy linked to one once so I think they are defo out there.

Next issue is just how hot the bulb gets, and if it effects the plastic lenses of the JDM Lights. Some think it will be fine, others not so sure.

Don't know of anyone yet who has HIDs fitted with import lights, but I may have a go soon :)

I can't see any reason why not, unless you have a very very fussy MOT tester.

I know plenty of people running this conversion for a long time with no trouble, just make sure your headlights are aligned correctly.

I put my old lights and my hid's up against my garage door and could not see any real difference in the beam pattern.

After all the lights havent been changed just the bulbs, so light is coming from the same place and being reflected by the same mirrors.

I've got a spare pair of JDM lights so I might dismantle them and see how it goes :)

Also I want this conversion with ebay after market headlights so will this work? Do you do anything to the housing itself or jus tchange the rubber thing with the bulb?

All you do is unclip the current bulb, insert the new bulb and clip back in.

Exactly the same as if you were just changing a blown bulb. The hardest part if finding somewhere for the ballasts.
