How to remove Rocker cover and paint it.....

Postby pablo296 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 11:50 pm

My rocker cover was looking in a poor condition so i decide to get out my tools and go to work on it.

First of all i will show you a pic of what it was like before:-

Image

As you can see not the best condition you have seen before.

Step 1.

Remove cover which hides the spark plugs and also remove bolts holding pipes as pic shows.

Image

Step 2.

Label each lead 1,2,3&4 so you know how they came out as shown in pic.

Image

Step 3.

Remove spark plugs as required dont know the size as i didnt look

Image

Step 4.

Remove all 8 10mm nuts holding the rocker cover in places as shown in pic.

Image

Step 5.

Remove rocker cover from engine bay.

Image

Well thats removing it done, Time taken about 30mins with taking pic and never donw it before.( Please add if i missed anything)

Painting Rocker cover.

Next on the list was to paint it with some VHT paint, I wanted a red VHT paint but i order the wrong one and got black  But never mind still does the job.

Step 1.

I used nitro mors which i got from woolworths for £2.09 which i thinks a bargain as everywhere else i look cost around the £4.00 mark. Tools shown below.

Image

Step 2.

Place rocker cover on something like bricks or like me a cable drum  just so its easy to do down the bottom of the rocker cover.

Image

Step 3.

Start using the nitro mors on the rocker cover I found the more you use the easy the paint come off. you can tell when its done as the paint start to flake off as shown below.

Image

Step 4.

I then got the hose out and washed it all down.

Image

Next came the paint, I done mine in my workshop as it was easier because i had all the tool but it does say to paint in a well vented area.

I Used some silcon grease to make sure my HONDA and VTEC stood out as you can see on the pic down the page a bit it work great

I went from side to side then up and down for my first coat waited about 10 mins then done a second coat.

I then got my heat gun out as it say it give it a better finish with closer Wrinkles shown here.

Image

After a few hours this is how it should look.

Yeah  No need to remove the plugs at all, the cover just lifts off anyways with all the bolts undone!!!

Anyways... I used this technique when doing mine BUT i just used Hammerite BBQ Matt Black paint in a spray can, i prefer the flat black look :) 5-6 coats should do it and it turns out mint! To be honest tho, once id stripped all the paint off i did give it a throuogh scrub with various wire brushes to remove any pain left and the resedue thats built up underneath it THEN sanded it down with Rough, then Medium then Smooth papers to leave a very smooth finish and then sprayed it :) Didnt silicone the H or Vtec, just sanded it off with Medium then Fine sandpaper with a solid block so as not to scratch the surface anywhere else! Turned out very good indeed :D

I toke out the spark plug because i didnt know you could leave them in as i said i've never done this before eg. never took a rocker cover off before so I seen them in there and just though they might get in the way I can also use that pics on a "How to change spark plugs".

At the end of the day i havent got a clue with cars and iam trying to make it easiers for anyone who is the same as me in that department.

I do like the finish of mine it total different to what i was expecting but in a good way, Would of like it to be red but thats my own silly mistake It does say you can paint over it so i might get some red paint but dont know yet.

With the letters i wish i just sanded it off as i now need to touch up around the letters no big deal but would of been nice to do it right first time.

also have pic of it on the car.
Image

I got the paint from http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=8219

It cost me in total £14 pound as i brought a few other things, they also do red and grey.

What do you mean about nitromores.

like i said mine would of been red if i order the right paint  they got it at that web site they also have Grey which i reakon would be a nice colour.

Have a go it very easy to do. I have had the rocker cover on my car and the wrinkles have got even tighter now due to the heat and the paint being wet still so it look better. Say it take 5 day to dry but you can touch in 24 hours .

nitromors is very dangerous stuff, you dont want to get it on anything, as it can pretty much burn through it!

I want to do mine soon, but im not sure what colour to go, black, green (like the car) or red (like the CAI)

Just wondering, the people who have done this, has the paint cracked/peeled off over time. I would'nt mind give it a go but dont want to waste my time if its just going to look kack in a months time.

Maybe I should just powder coat it?
